An empty field and one man’s concern for the hungry resulted in the Potato Project. In 2009, with volunteer help from local congregations,7,733 pounds of potatoes were grown, harvested and then distributed to local food pantries and the Reading Food Bank reaching 1,405 families in need.
Six years later this ministry has grown to include eight fields with a harvest of 153,000 pounds of potatoes and 4,855 pounds of carrots. Local congregations, schools and businesses “love their neighbor” by volunteering in the fields and, in 2014, 30,000 families/neighbors in need benefited from the fresh produce.
As part of ELCA "God's Work. Our hands." Sunday, St. Paul’s will be volunteering this year on September 13 from 1:00pm - 5:00pm. Contact the church office at 610-944-8388 for more information.
